Celebrating Lily Palmer and the Lifesaving Efforts of First Responders

Posted March 31, 2022

Lily Palmer, her family, and members of the Granville County Sheriff’s Office, Granville 911, Granville Emergency Medical Services, Corinth Volunteer Fire Department, and Brassfield Volunteer Fire Department

On March 25, Lily Palmer, her family, and local officials gathered at the Granville County Law Enforcement Center to celebrate Lily’s life and the efforts of her step-brother, Elijah, her brother Luke, Granville County 911 Emergency Communications, the Granville County Sheriff’s Office, Granville Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Corinth Volunteer Fire Department, and Brassfield Volunteer Fire Department who all played a critical role in saving Lily’s life earlier this year.

On February 4, 2022, Elijah found his stepsister lying unresponsive and not breathing at their home. Elijah called 911, and Telecommunicator Jordan Robinson answered the call. As Jordan was processing the call, she began giving CPR instructions to Elijah while another Telecommunicator continued the dispatch process and sent first responders from EMS, two local volunteer fire departments, and the Sheriff’s Office to the scene. Deputy Jacob Cash was the first to arrive on the scene and took over CPR administration began so calmly and bravely by Elijah.

Soon after Deputy Cash arrived, members of the Corinth Volunteer Fire Department and Brassfield Volunteer Fire Department arrived at Lily’s home. Deputy Cash and these firefighters rotated administering CPR until paramedics arrived from EMS stations in Wilton and Creedmoor. Throughout the incident, Lily’s brother Luke was able to give their mother updates over the phone while first responders continued their life-saving work. Deputy Jessica Laws was next to arrive on the scene and used her training as a School Resource Officer to console the family as they waited for the next steps. EMS paramedics and firefighters were able to load Lily into the ambulance and transport her to a local hospital for further treatment.

“Lily’s story did not end that day,” said 911 Emergency Communications Director Trent Brummitt. “Because of the team effort of all the people here today, be it family, volunteer fire fighters, law enforcement, telecommunicators, or paramedics, Lily is still here with us.”

Tony Cozart, Chair of the Granville County Board of Commissioners presented Lily, her family, and all the first responders present with a Granville County 275th Anniversary Coin as a token of gratitude. Vice-Chair Russ May and Commissioner Zelodis Jay also offered words of thanks for the hard work of all involved and appreciation for the work of all who made sure that Lily was still here with us.

Granville County would like to take this opportunity to remind all citizens to always call 911 in case of emergency so that our telecommunicator professionals can dispatch appropriate agencies to the scene. Life saving measures like CPR are easy to learn, and residents are encouraged to take classes certified by the American Heart Association (https://cpr.heart.org/en/). These simple steps can save the life of a loved one.

Granville County Economic Development recently facilitated the “adoption” of Granville Central High School by Ontic. Representatives from Ontic will work with faculty and staff at Granville Central and Granville County Public Schools to promote career opportunities at Ontic’s Creedmoor production facility as well as other opportunities available at their global corporate locations.

Derek Ashcroft, Site Leader for Ontic’s local production center, stated “we are excited to partner with Granville County Economic Development and Granville County Public Schools to promote Ontic and prepare this next generation of workers for careers in aerospace manufacturing.”

“Ontic is providing hands-on educational experiences through facility tours and in-person interactions with engineers working on exciting developments in aerospace manufacturing, right in Granville Central High School’s back yard,” said Tamara Rodebaugh, Career Development Coordinator with Granville County Public Schools.

“This partnership with Ontic allows students to gain exposure to the engineering field, learn new skills, and validate their interest through job shadowing and internships.”

Granville Central faculty and administration will work with Ontic employees to promote career opportunities at their company, with an emphasis on engineering and trade careers. This will give Ontic the ability to showcase their company and help local students find the career that could be the perfect fit right here in Granville County.

“Ontic has committed to Grow with Granville by making a long-term investment in expanding their Creedmoor facility,” Granville County Economic Development Director Harry Mills added. “Ontic and Granville County are great places to begin or grow as a professional. We are so proud that our local industry leaders and public school system are willing to partner to ensure that our county is competitive to recruit and retain companies like Ontic.”

Webb High School and Economic Development staff are ready to match Granville County businesses with local schools to promote workforce development and career opportunities for our residents.

Granville County Senior Recertified as Center of Excellence

Posted March 28, 2022

The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford has once again achieved designation as a Center of Excellence from the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services. This recertification marks the fourth consecutive term that the Center has achieved this prestigious designation. Originally certified in 2007, the Granville County Senior Center completed the recertification process in 2012, 2017, and again in 2022. The certification lasts for five years, which will allow Granville County to maintain Center of Excellence accreditation through 2027.

The Granville County Senior Center has established itself as a truly outstanding provider of senior services by successfully completing the Center of Excellence certification process four times. Receiving this designation is the result of a voluntary five-year process designed to strengthen senior centers across North Carolina by documenting the achievements of centers that are providing quality programs and services.

The Granville County Senior Center received special commendations for programs like the Creative Lifelong Learning Program, Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s patients, the Community Aging Fund, and the Senior Welfare Program partnership with the Granville County Sheriff’s Office. These programs were noted as showcasing the outstanding strengths of senior services in Granville County by the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services.

Designation as a Center of Excellence means that “the center provides exemplary services and opportunities in their community and serves as a mentor and model to other senior centers” according to the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services. Senior centers are provided the opportunity to seek this designation to enhance professionalism, provide accountability, assure quality, improve credibility, promote consistent standards, and identify excellence among senior services providers. The Center of Excellence designation also makes the Granville County Senior Center eligible for additional state funding for service enhancement and equipment/furniture purchases.

For more information about programs and services provided at the Granville County Senior Center, as well as the two additional locations in Creedmoor and Stovall, please visit their website or call 919-693-1930.

Granville County Celebrates Social Work Month

Posted March 9, 2022

Granville County Government and the Department of Social Services are celebrating National Social Work Month in March with the theme “The Time is Right for Social Work” to highlight how social workers have enriched our society for more than a century and how their services continue to be needed today.

The annual Social Work Month campaign is a time to inform the public, policymakers, and legislators about the services social workers provide in the community. People become social workers because they have a strong desire to help others and make our society a better place to live for all.

Social workers continued to work on the frontlines throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, helping clients get the health care they needed and helping loved ones overcome grief and loss. Social workers will continue to play a key role in helping people as this nation grapples with issues such as racism, economic uncertainty, deep political and cultural differences, and natural disasters.

Each day, social workers empower residents across Granville County to live life to their fullest potential. The job of social workers in Granville County and across North Carolina never stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our dedicated social workers have been on the frontlines and in the community and will continue to be here to serve the most vulnerable members of Granville County. Be sure to thank a social worker this month, and learn more about this challenging and rewarding profession.

Visit the National Association of Social Workers website for more information.
