Granville County Emergency Services is monitoring the track of Hurricane Ian as it makes its way north of Cuba towards the Gulf Coast of Florida.
Hurricane Ian made landfall around 4:30 a.m. this morning over western Cuba with 125 mph winds and is expected to make landfall across portions of west-central Florida late Wednesday or early Thursday morning before curving northward. Beyond Thursday, much uncertainty remains in the long-term track and intensity.
Impacts to NC are expected by late week with heavy rain across NC as the primary hazard; 2-5” across much of NC with 5-7”+ possible near the coast and along the Blue Ridge Escarpment. Rain chances will increase across southeastern NC Thursday night, with the most widespread rainfall expected on Friday and Saturday. Several periods of moderate to heavy rain are expected to move across the area during this time, possibly resulting in localized urban and poor drainage flooding. Gusty winds will also be possible late this week and weekend as Ian moves through the region. Isolated downed trees and power outages will be possible due to gusty winds and saturated soils.
