Upcoming Programs from Senior Services

Due to popular demand, the Granville County Senior Center will be offering a continuation of the Dementia Awareness Series held earlier this year. The series began with the basics of Alzheimer’s and dementia, ending in May with dementia related behaviors. On Tuesday, July 11, the Senior Center will be continuing the series with “Effective Communication Strategies”, a class focused on sending and receiving messages using attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join the Senior Center in Oxford on Tuesday, July 11 from 6-7 p.m. to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. Contact the senior center at 919-693-1930 to register.

Also in July, the Granville County Senior Center will begin a “Chronic Disease Self-Management Program”. This six-week program covers several topics, such as techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, nutrition, and decision making. Each participant will receive a copy of Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition and an audio relaxation CD. The workshop will begin on Wednesday, July 12 and continue on each Wednesday through August 16 from 2-4:30 p.m. Contact the senior center at 919-693-1930 to register.
