Event scheduled to mark Elder Abuse Awareness Day

In observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Granville County Department of Social Services (DSS) will host a drive-through “Lunch and Learn” on Tuesday, June 15. This community education event, organized by the DSS Adult and Parent Services Unit, will be held in the parking lot of the former Oxford Armory, located at 105 Spring Street in Oxford.

Participating residents will be provided with helpful information about services available to Granville County families, as well as a free lunch.

An annual observance, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was established on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization of the United Nations. According to the National Center for Elder Abuse, at least one in ten older adults experienced some form of abuse or neglect in the prior year. Social isolation, financial strains, emotional stress or dementia can all make a senior vulnerable to mistreatment or abuse.

The drive-through “Lunch and Learn” event is open to the public during the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., while supplies last. For more information, please contact the Granville County Department of Social Services at 919-693-1511.
