The North Carolina Horse Council plans to hold an equine referendum to extend the Horse Industry Promotion Assessment which was first authorized in 1999. The referendum will be conducted in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on March 8, 2017.
Polling places will be set up in each county Cooperative Extension office. Horse owners will be able to vote on whether or not to extend, for ten years, a $4.00 per ton assessment being paid by manufacturers of horse feed sold in North Carolina.
Polling places will be open during regular business hours in each Cooperative Extension Service office. Voting in Granville County will be at the Granville County Cooperative Extension Center located at 125 Oxford Loop Road, Oxford, NC, 27565. Voting will take place form 8:30 am until 5:00 pm.
Any horse owner/lessor over the age of nine can vote. There will also be an absentee balloting system put in place for owners who are not able to get to the Extension Offices on March 8, 2017.
The Berea Convenience Site will be closed beginning Monday, February 27, 2017 to construct a concrete apron off of Russell Road, a concrete pad for a recycling compactor, and a new concrete pad for trash compactor. Unfortunately, the construction and dry time of the concrete will cause for the site to be CLOSED for three weeks. The site will reopen on Friday, March 17, 2017. Citizens are encouraged to use the closest convenience sites in Butner, Oxford, and/or Oak Hill.
Granville County Animal Management and Granville County Senior Services are collecting information about pet ownership in Granville County. We will use this data to better understand pet owners in Granville County and where services are needed. This survey is anonymous. Please only take it once. 2/19/2017 @ 3:10PM – Message from Granville County Forest Ranger Rob Montague “Spring Wildfire Season is Here!
The Granville County Fire Marshal’s Office and the NC Forest Service urge residents to be careful with fire. Granville County Fire Departments and the NC Forest Service responded to multiple wildfires across the county this weekend, caused by careless debris burning. Dry conditions and dead cured grasses allowed these fires to spread quickly. Proper and vigilant care is required when burning yard debris. Always clear to bare soil around the burn area, have a water source and tools available when burning, and stay with the fire until it is completely out. Check the weather before starting any fire and if it is dry or windy, delay burning until after significant rainfall. Utilize other options such as mulching and composting if possible. It’s always illegal to burn any processed material. Residents are held responsible for their fire, including damage to others’ property and possible court prosecution for escaped fires. Ben Knox, President of the North Carolina Soil and Water Districts, and Danielle Adams, Area IV Chair of Durham, presented Granville County District Supervisor Ronnie Burnette (center), with his 20 year plaque. The presentation was made at the November 2016 Area Meeting in Durham. Burnette serves as Chairman of the Granville Soil and Water Board. Thank you for your service, Ronnie!
Randy Guthrie, Vice Chair of the Granville Soil and Water District Board, was recognized for 10 years of service at the district’s recent meeting by District Chair, Ronnie Burnette. Guthrie, retired from the Bull Research Station in Butner, is still active on his farm, raising beef cows and in forestry. Thank you for your service, Randy!

The Granville County Cooperative Extension Service, Large Animal Veterinary Services, Flat River Veterinary Clinic, and Southern States Cooperative of Oxford are working together to provide Coggin’s Clinics for Granville County horse owners. The dates and times for the clinics are:
Friday, February 17, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm (Large Animal Vet Services)
Saturday, February 18, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (Large Animal Vet Services)
Saturday, February 25 from 8:30 am to 12:30 (Flat River Vet Clinic)
All the clinics will be held at Southern States Cooperative, 607 Hillsboro Street, Oxford, NC. Turn into the west end of the store parking lot, cross the railroad tracks, and proceed to the bulk storage area where you will see the clinic set up. There is a circular drive that should make it easy for folks to get in and out.

Vaccinations for rabies, West Nile Virus, EWE/Tetanus, and Equine Influenza/Rhinovirus are also available at the Coggin’s Clinics.
Horses that are taken off the farm to events such horse shows or trail rides, or even for pleasure riding off the farm should be tested for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). The Coggin’s Clinics offer this test at a reduced rate for horse owners.
