Clayton Oxford, part of the Clayton Home Building Group – within Clayton, a Berkshire Hathaway Company – is one of forty home building facilities across the nation (and one of four facilities in North Carolina) that produces both inventory and custom-ordered prefabricated housing. The Clayton Homes Building Group is part of the “Clayton” family of companies that builds and sells manufactured homes under several brand names, including Oakwood, Crest, Norris, Cavalier and others, across the country.

North Carolina is one of the five largest markets for prefabricated homes in the nation. With a median household income of $48,256* – as compared with the national income average of $55,322* – manufactured housing provides an affordable option for N.C. residents.  More than 1,000 Clayton Built homes are shipped from the Granville County facility each year.

HISTORY

Jim Clayton founded the company in 1956 and has been building homes since 1971. The company grew with the goal of building affordable, quality-built prefabricated homes, apartments, commercial buildings, military barracks and college dormitories for people all across America. In 2003, Clayton became part of Berskshire Hathaway, Inc., a multinational conglomerate owned by Warren Buffett, one of the most well-known businessmen in the entire world.

Today, Clayton has grown to include 40 home-building facilities – including the Oxford facility  – as well as 19 supply centers, 362 home centers and 97 site-built subdivision across the nation. Last year, more than 106,000 team members of the Clayton Home Building Group built approximately 488,000 prefabricated and site-built homes to families across America. It is projected that, combined, more than 55,000 prefabricated and site-built homes will be built or shipped by the end of 2018.

PRESENCE IN GRANVILLE COUNTY

Clayton has been an integral part of the Granville County economy since 1987 and has been operating in the same location since the day the facility was opened. Headquartered in Maryville, Tennessee, Clayton’s management team selected Oxford as a manufacturing site primarily because of its geographic location, which is central to the “Delaware to Georgia” market on the eastern seaboard.

Granville County’s proximity to I-85 was also a factor in selecting Oxford as a manufacturing site, which makes for a streamlined process to transport the homes that are constructed there. The close distance between Oxford and Virginia is also a benefit, as many homes are delivered across state lines.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Clayton Oxford employs team members with varying skill sets, from tradesmen to leadership. Employee pay at the Oxford facility is competitive with the current entry level pay of $13 an hour. Merit increases can be awarded after a short period of time, with additional pay increases possible, dependent on a wide variety of factors.

Some of the jobs provided at Clayton Oxford include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, flooring, welding, painting, HVAC and cleaning, as well as forklift driving, material handling, health/safety inspections, wholesale sales, customer service, quality control and management. Pay is based on skill level and experience, and there is potential for weekly bonuses – based on productivity and other factors.

To be considered for employment with Clayton, a high school diploma (or GED) is preferred, as well as a willingness to transfer among various departments, as needed.  While community college training is helpful, certifications can also be earned in-house, through a training program.

Benefits, incentives and an ability to transfer to other Clayton locations is also available to team members.

THE FUTURE OF CLAYTON OXFORD

According to Clayton Oxford’s General Manager Dan Goodin, Granville County provides a wide variety of experienced and skilled workers. The county’s close proximity to Vance-Granville Community College is also a benefit, as more residents are re-discovering the “trade industry” and receiving hands-on training and experience.

Expansion plans for Clayton Oxford’s home building facility are approved for 2019, which will include new office space, a larger production floor, an updated cafeteria and other amenities.

“We are slowly changing the perception of manufactured housing,” General Manager Goodin says. “Granville County has been very welcoming and supportive. We’re invested in this community, and have no plans to move anywhere else.
