“Coggins Clinics” scheduled for horse owners

N.C. Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with Large Animal Vet Services and the Flat River Vet Clinic, has scheduled “Coggins Clinics” during the month of February.

A Coggins test is a blood test that samples a horse for the presence of Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), which is primarily transmitted through large biting flies such as horseflies or deerflies. Horse owners who travel to events such as horse shows, trail rides, festivals or other events must provide proof that their animal has a “negative” report for the Coggins test and are required to carry the Coggins information and a health certificate with them when taking their horse off the farm.

Local clinics are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 15 from 2 until 4 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 23 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Southern States Cooperative, 607 Hillsboro Street in Oxford.

Also provided during these clinics will be vaccinations for EWE/Tetanus, Flu/Rhinovirus, Rabies and West Nile Virus. These vaccines will be available for additional charges.

For prices and scheduling, contact the Granville County Cooperative Extension Office at 919-603-1350.
