Mural Completed at Granville County Senior Center

The Oak tree is a common symbol of strength and endurance. It’s beauty and resilience is the inspiration behind why it was chosen as the main theme for the new mural recently painted on the wall in the fitness room of the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford.

The daughter of a long-time fitness program participant made a generous donation to the Granville County Senior Center, earmarked for the fitness program. Mary Ann Hester participated in the fitness program for years, and after her death, her daughter Benjie and Benjie’s husband, Dana Lasher, wanted to contribute to the program that Mary Ann loved so dearly.

Granville County natives Issac Talley and his sister-in-law, Sarah Clairborne Taylor, both talented artists, understood the vision Senior Services had for the fitness room and came up with ideas to bring the vision we had to “life.” Issac is an art instructor at VGCC and Sarah is a graduate of East Carolina University and spent her high school years at the NC School of the Arts. Senior Services was very fortunate to find artists of their talent.

Many thanks to Benjie Hester and her husband Dana Lasher for financing this endeavor and to Sarah Claiborne Taylor and Issac Talley for their ideas and execution of this project.
