The Granville County Human Relations Commission is sponsoring an essay contest to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year on the third Monday of January, the Granville County Human Relations Commission celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with its Annual Fellowship Breakfast. In conjunction with the Fellowship Breakfast, again this year, the GCHRC is sponsoring a student essay contest. Students will write their own “I Have A Dream” speech based on their research and life perspectives.

Contest Rules
• Essay Contest parameters include:
Open to students in grades 6 – 12
Students must be enrolled in a Granville County Middle and High School
An Entry form must be submitted with the essay
Students may submit only one essay and it must be the student’s original work
Essays may NOT include photographs, images, illustrations, etc.
450 word limit
Essay must be typed
Entry deadline is November 18, 2016
• Judging parameters include:
Content/Development: Addresses quote, essay organization, evidence to support position
Language & Mechanics: Standard English, Sentence structure, word choice, grammar
Prizes
Awards will be presented in two age groups: grades 6 – 8 and grades 9 – 12.

3rd Place: $100.00                        3rd Place: $100.00
(NOTE: The above are prize values. Gifts and gift cards will be awarded)
Notification: Winners will be notified no later than January 5th, 2017 and will receive their awards at the MLK Annual Fellowship Breakfast on Monday, January 16, 2017. The 1st place winners will read their essays as a part of the Fellowship program.
1st, 2nd and 3rd place essays will be published on the GCHRC website.
